G.R.A.S. founder Gunnar Rasmussen celebrates 90 years

Gunnar Rasmussen, the distinguished acoustic engineer, who founded G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration, celebrates his 90th birthday November 23, 2015.

At the age of 67 where most people are heading for retirement, Gunnar Rasmussen left Brüel & Kjær and founded G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration in 1994. Starting out as a small family business run by him and his wife Hanna Hertz, the new company quickly grew into a respected leader in measurement microphones, turning many of its founder’s so-far unexploited inventions into commercial successes. Today, the company offers more than 100 different microphones, employs 90 people, and has offices or affiliates in approximately 40 countries worldwide. Gunnar Rasmussen and Hanna Hertz' sons, Per Rasmussen and Peter Wulf-Andersen, now play key R&D roles at G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration.

Of the many challenges that drove Gunnar Rasmussen to innovate, few were more important than the size of the reference microphone. This led him to develop the world’s first 1-inch reference microphone, which became the de facto standard worldwide. At G.R.A.S., we and our customers benefit daily from Gunnar Rasmussen’s exceptional understanding of acoustics, physics, electronics and measurement needs. We are proud to develop and produce the broadest range of high-quality measurement microphones and accessories in the industry and help create new opportunities with our customers.

At G.R.A.S. we know that to trust your measurement results; signal quality, stability and robustness are essentials. And because we also know how you handle and use the microphones in your daily work, we design and build them to perform under real life conditions – and beyond. We use a series of “Highly Accelerated Life Tests” to ensure that our microphones live up to the high quality and precision that our customers have come to expect and trust. Our HALT tests actively accelerate the lifetime of a microphone by simulating the handling and use it is exposed to in real life situations.
